VICKERS FINISH ON A HIGH WITH HOME WIN AND 2ND SPOT
The 07/08 season finished in good spirits at Oakwood with a 3-1 win against a much changed Sevenoaks Town and with news that Beckenham Town had only managed to draw at Lordswood meaning that the Vickers had finished in 2nd spot for the 2nd season running. Could it be third time lucky next season?!
The game started brightly for the boys in green to follow the same pattern of recent games and within 10 minutes the Vickers scored their first goal when some good passing ended with the ball being played to Jack Parkinson some 30 yards from goal and without any hesitation he struck the ball early and it went like a missile into the top corner giving the keeper no chance. The goal was a stunner and must go down as one of the goals of the season on a par with Kane Rice’s solo goal away at
Croydon. The home side continued to threaten the Oaks goal and a succession of corners went close to increasing the lead whilst at the other end Tedder made what has to be save of the season with a full stretch save that was heading for the bottom corner from a Constable header. Constable went close again soon after but on 25 minutes the Vickers increased their lead when a patient build up ended with a pass into the box where Kevin Spriggs got to the ball just before the Oaks defender and got bundled over resulting in a penalty award. Richard Sinden clutched the ball first and placed the ball on the spot sending a weak effort straight at the keeper for an easy save but the linesman adjudged that he had moved off his line so a re-take was awarded. Sinden clutched the ball once more and inevitably scored this time sending the keeper the wrong way. This made his end of season duel with fellow strike partner Huggins all the more interesting as it set Sinden out on 20 goals for the season, one more than Huggins! With the score at 2-0 at half time the mighty Vickers increased the lead once more following a very good team goal with slick passing that ended with a tidy finish in the box for Gary Ward. This signalled a triple substitution for the Vickers with Mitchell, Ramirez and Hogg being introduced for Huggins, Sinden and Spriggs to play out the last half hour. Mitchell and Ramirez caused further problems for the Oaks defence and Ramirez created a couple of chances for himself that went close. With only 7 minutes remaining the Oaks scored a fine consolation when a defence splitting pass found Constable in space and his lobbed finish reduced the arrears to make the final score 3-1.
LEAGUE RESTRUCTURING – WHO KNOWS!
The Kent League for next season is shrouded in mystery at the moment as with one team going up the number reduces to 16 unless a new side comes into the league. If the number stays at 16 then the league may lose its right to play at step 5. Add to the this the restructuring and doubts surrounding the Ryman leagues above and the future for the Vickers is a bit of a mystery at the minute. Aside from this doubt the ground will have all facilities in place next week to ply its trade in the Ryman League whenever that may be when the new seated stands arrive from Blackpool where they have been in manufacture. Therefore the futures bright, the futures Green!
SOME BIG FRIENDLIES LINED UP FOR THE 08/09 PRE SEASON CALENDAR
The club has some excellent friendlies lined up against some big sides in what promises to be another enjoyable year of football down at Oakwood. Dates and opponents to be advised but 4 games have already been agreed and these are against higher non-league opposition and there is the possibility of a couple of league sides coming down this year to follow in the footsteps of Gillingham who brought a side last year to play out an entertaining 1-0 win.
